Top 4 Warning Signs of Gas Lines You Shouldn’t Ignore

Have you ever wondered why your gas connector might wear out or crack over time, especially if it does not get moved too often? This is because the metal hose could silently be leaking gas, causing potential harm to your home.

Gas lines are essential for many homes, as they power appliances like water heaters and stoves. However, just like every other piping system, when they get faulty, there are signs of gas line problems you shouldn’t ignore. Here’s a guide that points you through the most important clues you should always look out for, indicating it might be leaking or broken.

Bad/Fruity Smell

Gas cylinders are mostly filled with methane, propane, and butane, which you are not expected to perceive, as they are naturally odorless. However, utility companies added a scented chemical called mercaptan, giving a rotten and bad smell.

Except you are trying to refill your cylinder, this smell is a major indicator that your gas line might be leaking and shouldn’t be ignored. If you perceive this smell from any area of your home, maintain a long distance from where you believe the odour is more intense; this way, you don’t get hurt from a possible explosion that might happen. Keep away from any materials that might cause a spark, regardless of how small. In cases of emergency, ensure to contact your gas provider for an instant replacement. However, keep a distance while making the call.

Whistling Sounds

When your gas line starts to hiss or whistle, this is a clear indicator that there can be leakages, meaning gases are escaping at a very high pressure. In this scenario, open doors and windows to air out the space, allowing for proper ventilation. Additionally, turn off the gas at the main shutoff valve if you can do so safely.

Nose and Throat Irritation

Inhaling gases can cause coughing, throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, or nausea. If the room gets congested with the smell of the gas, it is also a sign of gas line problems. Regardless of whether you are asthmatic or have allergies, always reach out for help when experiencing dizziness. Call for help from a neighbor’s phone or outside your home, and turn off any electrical appliances that might spark.

Increase in Bills

This is a long shot to the many gas line warning signs,  as the harm might already have taken place. However, taking precautions by constantly checking your gas bills is a key step to noticing if things are wrong. A sudden spike in bills further erases your doubts. Hence, the best thing to do is to get in touch with your gas company to have your system inspected.

Endnote

Using a gas is a very efficient energy source, but it can lead to serious damage if proper attention and care are not devoted to maintaining your gas lines. Always trust your instincts, pay attention to your senses, and for bigger cases that might get out of hand, it is always best to contact emergency services or a trusted professional to properly handle the situation.
