Having Trouble Training Your Dog? Here Are Some Important Tips

August 08, 2021 by Jeremy Lindy

There Are Many Methods To Train Your Dog To Behave Properly

Dogs have been known to be friendly and playful towards everyone. However, to make sure that they behave in a good way, dogs must be trained properly. There are two basic methods that most experts use for training dogs. The first method is the Aversive-based method. This involves discipline training wherein the dogs are given positive punishment and negative reinforcement. This method includes scolding, physical corrections, and so on. If you are planning to go this way, make sure to get the proper equipment to make sure you won't hurt your dog in the process, you can find high-quality items on Neewa for an instance.

The second method on the other hand involves using a rewards-based system. In this method, you only reward your dog when they have done something you have asked them to do and this helps to avoid unwanted behavior from them. This method includes belly rubs, doggy treats, and other dog-pleasing activities that help to reinforce good behavior. Both the methods have their pros and con and which one you choose is completely up to you.

In the rewards-based system the dog associates with you with happy feelings and in the aversive-based system, they fear you.

How To Help Your Dog To Learn Properly

To begin with, you have to remember that your dog or puppy is pretty much like little kids. Their intelligence level is low and all they care about is the immediate consequences. They do not think about long-term effects like mature adults. They slowly start to understand what you say as they grow in age with you. While some breeds are known for their intelligence and can learn many words in their lifetimes, others may not be able to do the same. Dogs usually respond to your tone of voice rather than your words themselves.

Once you understand that your dog is just like an infant, you will be less frustrated and give it more time to get trained. You can discuss and read about pet owners with information on how to adjust your expectations so that you can match the physical and mental limitations of your dog. You will need to puppy-proof your house in the beginning. This will allow you to supervise it from a young age so that when the dog does get into trouble, you can stop him. Give them toys that are safe for them to play with and chew. Reduce the opportunities for accidents to take place in the house.

Your dog doesn’t understand the language that you speak. Therefore, when you try to give a common to your new dog or puppy and expect him to listen to you, you will be disappointed. One key way to teach your dog to follow different commands is by actually doing the activity while speaking about it. When your dog listens to you, keep training them with good treats. Your dog will respond to your better when you use quality treats like chicken breast recipes, liven, cheese, or other treats. While small treats will work for easy training sessions, but if you want to train your dog on something a bit more serious, you will definitely need to whip out these superior treats. You will be surprised how far the dog will listen to you just so that they can get a good treat.

Apart from handing out the treat, you can also use positive words like calling him a good boy when they are being good. Remember, if your dog makes a mistake, do not be overly hard on them. Your dog is not a human being and doesn’t have any manipulative streak in him wherein he is purposely trying to hurt or offend you. Sometimes bad behavior can be a genuine mistake.

Keep Your Dog’s Health In Check

Apart from your dog’s training at home, its health will also play an important role in how he reacts to the training. There are certain breeds that are more prone to health issues easily. If your dog is doing poorly in health, it might not be very good at following your commands and may resort to unwanted behavior. If they are in pain or overweight then again they will not respond to you easily.

Make it a point to visit the vet regularly. Keep your dog’s oral hygiene a priority at all times. Their food and water bowl should be clean. They should have access to a comfortable place to sleep every day. In case the weather gets too cold, you should allow your dog to be indoors. When your dog comes to you, greet them nicely. If you are in a bad mood, do not be harsh to your dog because they come to you when they see you. Your positive attitude will keep the dog cheerful and make him eager to please you.
