Getting Window Blinds: Avoid These 8 Mistakes

November 30, 2025 by Jeremy Lindy

Have you recently been thinking about getting window blinds for your home? Well, this is undeniably a good thing, because those products can certainly enhance your privacy and comfort, while also adding to the aesthetics of the space. If the answer is yes, and if you’ve finally decided to do this, then you will, without a doubt, have quite some important things to think about in order to be able to do this the right way.

If you’re curious about how to install these on your windows, this discussion may help: https://www.doityourself.com/forum/doors-skylights-windows/51925-installing-blinds.html

As mentioned, thus, you will have quite some important things to think about when trying to do this right. And, well, you are most likely worried about making certain mistakes in the process, which is clearly a legitimate concern, because we are all humans, and we all make mistakes. Yet, you would very much like not to make any here, so that you can be completely happy with the choices you’ve made and the products you got.

This is, without a doubt, the right way of thinking. To be able to avoid those mistakes, though, what you will have to do, naturally, is take your time to learn about some of them first. And, that’s what we are going to help with right now, because below I will list some of the common mistakes that people make in this process, in an effort to help you avoid them.

1.      Choosing Randomly

First things first, you should never make random choices here. What does that precisely mean, though? Well, when you are in a hurry to get your blinds, you could wind up just selecting the first ones you come across, without checking out the numerous and versatile options that exist out there. This could result in you coming across some of those amazing options later on, and then being unhappy with the choice you’ve made. Since you don’t want that to happen, I advise you to do some research instead of making random decisions.

2.      Ignoring Energy Efficiency

Now, you know that there are various things you should consider when you want to choose these products. But, you may wind up ignoring some important ones, either because you’re not aware of the necessity of checking them, or because you will simply assume that all blinds are the same in certain regards, which is not the case. Energy efficiency is one of those things you should never forget to check before buying, because, in the end, you want to get products that will be energy efficient and contribute to lowering your bills. Installation plays a part in energy efficiency as well, so you may want to learn more about how it is done.

3.      Ignoring Light Control

Moving on, you should also not ignore light control. Blinds are superior and rather precise when it comes to light control, allowing you to fine-tune the amount of light you want to let in. Yet, not all of these products are the same when it comes to this, so you should check instead of assuming.

4.      Ignoring the Style

Your style matters. And, you definitely want to find products that will fit in with your overall style, instead of looking like they are out of place in your home. So, don’t ignore this, because the idea is for you to create both a comfortable and an aesthetically pleasing space.

5.      Not Considering Maintenance Requirements

While blinds are generally easy to maintain, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t check those maintenance requirements specifically, instead of simply assuming that they are, once again, all the same. Some may require a bit more maintenance than others, and you want to make a choice that will suit your lifestyle. Although, as mentioned, these are generally easy to maintain, so a quick dusting and cleaning with a damp cloth should always do the trick for most of them.

6.      Not Taking the Correct Measurements

Perhaps one of the biggest mistakes you can make is buying the blinds without taking the correct measurements. This will lead to them definitely looking out of place, while also not serving their purpose successfully. So, don’t forget to take the measurements, or let the pros do it if you don’t know how.

7.      Not Choosing the Right Company

Speaking of pros, here’s another mistake to consider. Basically, you have to choose the right blinds company to provide you with these products and do the installation for you. So, don’t rush into making this choice, and do your best to make a smart one.

8.      Deciding Based on the Prices

Here is the final thing to know. I understand that your budget is important to you and that you want to stick to it, and I definitely support that. What I think is a mistake, though, is the idea of choosing your blinds based on the prices alone, and ignoring all the other factors. This could actually result in you being unhappy with the choice after a short while, and thus needing to make a change, which will ultimately cost even more. So, do consider the prices, but always keep quality in mind as well.
