Do You Need a Licence to Operate a Telehandler in the UK?

August 29, 2025 by Jeremy Lindy

Telehandlers, also known as telescopic handlers, are powerful machines widely used in construction, agriculture, and logistics. If you plan to use or hire a telehandler, it is essential to understand the rules regarding licenses, training, and certification. Proper Telehandler Training ensures your safety, helps you remain compliant with legal requirements, and makes it easier to hire equipment when needed.

Do You Need a Licence to Operate a Telehandler?

In the UK, there is no official government licence for driving a telehandler. However, the law does say that anyone using plant equipment must be properly trained and competent. This is part of the rules under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER). Employers have a duty to make sure operators are trained to use telehandlers safely.

Training and Certification for Telehandler Operators

Instead of a licence, operators demonstrate their competence by gaining certification. The two most common and accepted schemes in the UK are:

  • CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme)

  • NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme)

These courses teach both theory and practical skills. Training typically covers safe operation, reading load charts, performing daily checks, and ensuring site safety. At the end of the course, operators receive a CPCS or NPORS card that is valid for up to five years. Most employers and plant hire companies recognise these cards as proof of training.

Why Training is Important

Even though a legal licence is not required, proper training is essential. Without it, there is a higher risk of accidents, equipment damage, and insurance-related issues. Most plant hire companies will not allow self-drive hire unless the operator has proof of certification. This makes training the standard requirement across the industry.

Can You Hire a Telehandler Without Certification?

Most hire companies will only let you operate a telehandler yourself if you hold a valid CPCS or NPORS card. If you do not have one, many firms can provide operated hire. This means the machine comes with a trained and certified operator. Although this costs more, it ensures the job is done safely and in line with health and safety regulations.

How Much Does Telehandler Training Cost in the UK?

The price of telehandler training depends on your experience, the training provider, and where you take the course. A full CPCS or NPORS course for beginners usually costs between £600 and £900. Experienced operators who only require an assessment typically pay between £400 and £600. Refresher training is typically less expensive, costing between £200 and £300. Some providers also give discounts for group training or in-house courses run at a company site. Investing in proper training not only qualifies you to operate a telehandler but also ensures you are competent in handling lifting equipment safely.

What You Need to Know Before Operating a Telehandler

You do not need a government licence to operate a telehandler in the UK. However, you do need proper training and certification, usually through CPCS or NPORS. These certificates are accepted across the industry and are required by most employers and hiring companies.

In short, while the term telehandler licence is often used, what you really need is recognised training and certification. This demonstrates your competence, keeps you safe on site, and ensures you meet both legal and industry standards.
