DIY Tips For a Relaxing Spa Effect With Your Bathroom Decor

February 13, 2024 by Jeremy Lindy

There are few things as relaxing and rejuvenating as visiting a spa. However, most folk can’t visit the spa on a daily basis. Thankfully, you can bring a sense of tranquillity and luxury into your own home by transforming your bathroom into a relaxing spa retreat. Here are some ideas that might spark inspiration.

A Tranquil Aesthetic

When you think of a spa, you probably picture a relaxing aesthetic. Although this often means minimal decor, many spas also feature artistic accents. For example, glass mosaic tiles are a popular choice and can be surprisingly easy to install. You could even create a glass-on-glass mosaic on a frame, shower screen, or section of mirror using adhesives like glass glue and hand-picked pieces of glass. These kinds of personalized accents can really bring life to the room and provide a dash of contrast to an otherwise minimal, uncluttered space.

Embracing the beauty of nature is another top tip if you want to create a calming ambiance. Houseplants are an easy and effective way to do this. Whether it’s a bouquet of flowers, an array of succulents, or any other combination, you can create a soothing connection to the outdoors in your bathroom. If you really want to benefit from the presence of plants, try hanging eucalyptus over the shower head — this allows the steam to diffuse the eucalyptus’ vapor, which is believed to have stress-relieving properties.

Rocks and crystals are also popular for those looking to enhance their bathroom’s connection to the natural world. Whether or not you believe in the potential healing properties of crystals, their sparkle is sure to add beauty and visual intrigue to the space. This doesn’t mean your room has to become cluttered — you could opt to keep rocks and crystals in glass bowls. For a touch of luxury in your bathroom decor, you might find some inspiration from Oasis Home Spa, where you can explore various ways to create a relaxing spa-like atmosphere at home.

A Functional Space

It’s important to remember that a bathroom, primarily, exists for a practical purpose. The bath is often the focal point of the room, providing a space for physical and mental cleansing. If there’s one aspect of the room to really go all out with, this is it — why not invest in a more spacious bath or even a luxurious jacuzzi bath? The addition of a bath tray or caddy will provide convenient storage for essentials such as a book, a refreshing drink, or even your phone.

For real attention to detail, make sure to get matching towels and towelled robes, just like you’d find in a professional spa. Keep these folded neatly and readily accessible on shelves or in cupboards so you can easily grab them after a rejuvenating soak. While the traditional spa aesthetic uses crisp white linens, feel free to personalize your space to your individual tastes if you’d prefer a dash of color here!

If you really want to replicate the look of a traditional spa, consider organizing your soaps, shower gels, and shampoos into matching glass bottles. This simple step can quickly bring a sense of cohesion and sophistication to the space, and remove unsightly plastic containers from the mix. What’s more, it can also encourage a sense of mindfulness in your self-care routine.

A Feast for the Senses

For the ultimate spa effect, you need to engage all of the senses. Scent plays a large role in relaxation — the olfactory system is closely linked to the limbic system in the brain, which regulates emotions and memories. Pleasant aromas are particularly effective in creating a serene atmosphere, so consider incorporating scented candles and essential oil diffusers into your space.

Sound can also significantly impact your sense of well-being. With waterproof Bluetooth speakers, you can set the mood with calming music like classical, ambient, or world music. Alternatively, nature sounds like waves crashing, rainforest noises or whale songs can help soothe the mind.

As well as being a luxurious addition to your bathing ritual, bath salts also offer numerous health benefits. Bath salts that contain minerals like magnesium and potassium can help relax muscles, alleviate stress, and help your body detox.

A Serene Sanctuary

When designing your bathroom, take inspiration from professional spas and try to engage all of the senses through aesthetic choices and carefully chosen scents and sounds. However, remember that it’s your space too, and you can personalize it however you want. If you manage to strike this balance, you can turn your bathroom into a space of sanctuary — a retreat within your own home.
