If you’ve never had a lot of confidence, or you’re just finding yourself a little low on the stuff lately, then you might feel at a loss. How can you develop confidence? How can you feel happy with yourself the way you are, no matter what? Surely it’s not possible?
Despite the way you’re feeling and what you’re thinking right now, it is possible to be happy with yourself just the way you are. It can take practice, and it can be a struggle sometimes. You’re not going to wake up every single day for the rest of your life feeling totally in awe of yourself (as much as you should - everybody is a work of art in their own way!).
However, you can definitely work towards feeling content with yourself no matter what. Read on to find out more:
Change Your Thoughts
The first thing you need to do if you’re going to be happy with yourself no matter what, is change your thoughts. Your thoughts set off your emotions, so if you let a negative thought hang about in your mind for too long, it’ll start to affect your mood, and then you might even begin to believe that thought. Here’s a secret: you are not your thoughts, and you don’t have to believe everything you think! When you notice you’ve begin to think negatively, change your thoughts and change your perspective. This is something you can control.
Make A List
Grab a pen and a piece of paper and write down everything you like about yourself, no matter how silly. Sense of humour, nice hands, small ears - absolutely anything goes. Put this list somewhere you can see it and read it through at least once a day.
If it means getting off social media for you to stop comparing yourself to others for now, then do it. Social media isn’t real, it’s simply the highlights of people’s lives that they want you to see. There are probably many things they don’t want you to see, and things they aren't happy about themselves. Somebody else’s beauty does not take away from your own.
Do Things For Yourself, Nobody Else
If you’re going to make a change, do it for yourself and nobody else. Whether you’re going to the gym to shape up or you’ve decided to take the plunge and have a breast augmentation, always do it for the right reasons. Remember, you may develop more confidence, but you still won’t automatically love yourself unless you truly begin to work on it beforehand.
Do Some Mirror Work
Look into your eyes in the mirror each day and say nice things to yourself. Tell yourself ‘I love you’. It may seem silly, but it’s called mirror work and it can really work. There’s even a book about it.
Fake It Until You Make It
Finally, fake confidence until you make it. Of course if you know you’re having real mental problems - get help. Do not delay help. However, if you’re just feeling a little low, smiling and standing up straight can automatically trick your brain into thinking you’re happy and confident!
