Mr. Edison Brings the Modern Supper Club to Philadelphia's Bellevue
Restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow, the CEO and founder of China Grill Management, has opened Mr. Edison inside Philadelphia’s landmark Bellevue Hotel, a modern reimagining of the 1940s supper club. The name nods to Thomas Edison, whose electrification of The Bellevue over a century ago helped stretch the city’s nights past sundown. The concept marks a homecoming for Chodorow, who attended college and law school and began his career in Philadelphia, and it arrives as a full evening experience built around dining, cocktails, live music, and service that intends to feel effortless.

The kitchen is led by Chef de Cuisine Matt Levin, a Le Bec-Fin and Lacroix alum who earned four bells from Philadelphia Inquirer critic Craig LaBan, with produce sourced from the owner’s farm in New Hope, PA. The menu mixes tribute dishes from Philadelphia’s late-1970s restaurant renaissance with modern American and globally inspired plates, from Sturgeon Caviar Dip and Le Bec-Fin’s Crab Galette to Lobster Thermidor and Veal Milanese. The bar riffs on Edison’s life with cocktails like Patent Pending, Night Watch, and the Filament No. 6, a blue cheese martini with pickled cherry tomatoes.
The design, by Spanish firm Clavel Arquitectos, fills the bi-level, 150-seat room with imported dark woodwork, a central Edison bulb sculpture, and a 12-foot rotating Ferris wheel that ferries premium spirits to the bartender in clear gondolas. The main entrance is at 1400 Walnut Street, with a second entrance through the hotel lobby. Mr. Edison is open 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, with dinner until 10 p.m., and until 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with dinner until 11 p.m.; expanded late-night programming begins this fall. Reservations are available at mredisonphilly.com, on DoorDash, and on OpenTable.
