What are the best beaches outside New York City?

The summer season has officially arrived, and thousands of people from across the country are flocking to the coasts for their annual vacations. With warmer weather approaching and the school year a thing of the past, residents of the New York City area are setting out for some much-needed relaxation and fun on the coastline. Get out of the house this summer and enjoy some of the best beaches close to New York City.

Fort Tilden Beach

Also known as the Fort Tilden Historic District, this former United States Army site is now one of New York City’s most secluded beaches. Inaccessible by car or train, this beach is one of the state’s best-kept secrets. Visitors often come by bike to walk along the 50 yards of sandy dunes and swim in the beautiful waters. This beach is also part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, which runs through Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.

Coney Island Beach

This area is known for more than just its shimmering coastlines. From movie nights and concerts to parades and contests, there’s plenty of fun to be had on Coney Island. For generations, this beach has been a main attraction each summer. Its shores are a hotspot for those looking for a beach and theme park in one location.

Orchard Beach

The Bronx’s only public beach, Orchard Beach is a popular spot for locals to enjoy summertime activities. Dubbed the “Riviera of New York,” this beach offers snack bars, picnic areas, playgrounds, and courts for an array of sports, including basketball, volleyball, and handball. First used as a beach in the 1930s, this shore is still one of the most popular New York beaches today.

Long Beach

Rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy destroyed it in 2012, this beach’s iconic boardwalk is back and better than ever. Just a 50-minute train ride from Manhattan station, Long Beach is the definition of New York-style fun. Featuring pristine sands ideal for a day of sunbathing, this beach has everything you need for a perfect day out.
