How to Pick the Right Rug Size for Every Room in Your Apartment

October 17, 2024 by Jeremy Lindy

Decorating an apartment can be exciting, but it also comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to selecting the perfect rug. Whether you live in a cozy studio or a spacious penthouse, rugs play a significant role in defining the aesthetic and comfort of your space. Size is one of the most important factors when shopping for a carpet.

Choosing the right size can throw off the entire balance of a room, making it feel comfortable and complete. The right rug, however, can anchor your furniture, create a sense of unity, and enhance the overall design of your apartment. For those interested in bringing luxury and tradition into their homes, Persian Rugs are an excellent choice.

Why Rug Size Is Significant

Before going to more detailed tips regarding the choice of the rug for every room, let’s find out why the rug size is crucial. A small carpet means a room is not adequately covered; however, a large rug can cause a room to look cramped. The right rug size defines the furniture's shape, and when placed correctly, it will compliment the house. A nicely sized rug also creates a welcoming feeling, essential when the floor is made of concrete, wood, or tile.

Another critical issue is the interconnection between rooms. One of the many benefits of having a multi-roomed apartment is that deciding how you want to divide the space through walls or screens can take a lot of work. Therefore, carefully choosing the proper sizes of rugs for connecting rooms can be a great way to solve this problem. With these fundamentals in mind, let’s proceed with how to choose the right rug size for every particular zone of your house.

Living Room: Anchoring Your Seating Area

The living room is usually the largest space in the living area and, therefore, one of the most important areas regarding rug size. Generally, the appropriate size of the rug in the living area depends on the size of the living area and the positioning of the furniture.

Another typical mistake to avoid is selecting a rug placed only under the coffee table. Although this may be cost-effective, it gives the room an ungainly look, as if it is partitioned from the rest of the house. Instead, you should bring your rug out further than your coffee table, which lies under the front legs of your sofas and chairs. This not only helps connect all the pieces of furniture but also gives a proper look to the whole seating area.

If you have a large living room, you can use a rug that will completely cover all the furniture, leaving some free space around the perimeter. This assists in giving the seating area a unique identity in the room. On the other hand, if your living room is small, you can also maintain a balanced appearance by choosing a rug that comes at least halfway up the front legs of the pieces of furniture.

Bedroom: Creating a Cozy Underfoot Experience

For instance, the bedroom aims to be warm and comfortable, which can be achieved by choosing the right-sized rug. The rug size should be dictated by the size of your bed and how much floor area you wish to be covered by the carpet. It is recommended that the rug be placed two feet away from the sides and foot of the bed. This is important to avoid making contact with a hard surface immediately after you wake up from bed, thus improving the floor's comfort.

For queen-sized beds, an appropriately sized 8×10 feet or larger rug is recommended. If you have a king-sized bed, you might have to upgrade to a 9×12 feet rug to avoid having the front feet of your bed hanging on the edge of the carpet. However, if your room is small, you should avoid using a large rug; instead, you should use runners or small rugs on each side of the bed. This way provides a similar level of comfort without the need to pack people in the room.

Dining Room: Defining the Eating Area

Proper rug size selection is also essential in the dining room, especially in apartments where dining rooms are frequently open. The primary criterion when choosing the dining rug is to ensure all the chairs are on the carpet when pulled out. This avoids transitioning from rug to floor when people sit or stand up from the table.

A rule of thumb is to select a rug at least 24 inches larger than your dining table on all sides. For instance, if the dining table is 4 by 6 feet, the carpet you should use should be eight by 10 feet. This guarantees that the whole dining set sits nicely on the rug, giving a clear and well-defined space for eating and providing an extra layer of cushioning and soundproofing.

Conclusion

Selecting rug sizes for every room in your apartment is one of the most critical aspects of designing your home. Whether used as a base for your living room seating area or as additional warmth in your bedroom, rugs are design elements that can also serve a purpose. If you take your time to measure each room and consider the size and shape, you can identify the right rug that will complement the room’s decor.
