9 Tips to Prepare for an International Removal Company

December 31, 2024 by Jeremy Lindy

Moving locally within your country can be a breeze, but crossing borders requires proper preparation. International removals and shipping companies’ services cater to commercial and residential moving. The process can be hectic, sometimes getting you all worked up and exhausted. But it doesn't always have to be if you have the right preparation tips. This article offers tips on how to prepare for an international removal company to make the process less tedious and more efficient.

1. Research Your New Destination

Cultures, weather, and ways of living vary in different places and are even more divergent when moving into a new country. A rigorous online search can tell you a lot about your destination, especially what to expect to be different from your country. You can also ask your friends and family or close business associates about what life is like, the culture, and the most sought-after foods—moving into another country while oblivious of what to expect can serve you a few unpleasant surprises like stringent visa requirements or language. These curve balls can potentially make the moving process hectic.

2. Research and Pick a Reputable Company

Moving companies can help you seamlessly move into Australia or any new country. Therefore, ensure you do your due diligence on your preferred company, abide by high operation standards, and meet your specific moving needs. Such specific needs can include preferable storage options, packing and unpacking, or specialized handling. There's a lot to learn about when using a removals company, including how they deal with customs clearance, their documentation, and their insurance policy. You can research online, call the company, or visit their offices for more concise information.

3. Understand Services and Costs

International shipping can be costly compared to local moving. Therefore, it's best to adequately prepare yourself financially. Moving to Australia from Europe for a small move in a shared container can vary between £550 and £1,890, while the price could be higher for a 20-ft shipping container, ranging from £3,117 - £4,990. Moving to Australia from the United States may cost marginally higher for a similar item size, about $7,000 to $9,500 or more. While service offerings vary among these companies, most offer international standard packing, loading and unloading, and some packing materials. Remember, your moving quote can vary depending on the move size, the type of shipping service, or the exact destination in the country you're relocating to.

4. Prepare Essential Documents

Having the correct documentation when relocating to a new country can save you time and delays. Unless a visa policy exists, you must possess a valid passport and visa to enter any new country. Some countries like Australia may require proof of income to demonstrate financial stability and insurance documents for anyone relocating into the country. It's also thoughtful to understand your destination country's import declaration for the goods and items you import and complete an import declaration form.

5. Review and understand the insurance policy

Every international removal company must have a valid insurance policy for their clients. Therefore, it's almost as good to demand one that should be coherent and provide comprehensive coverage. Also, don't forget to keep to your items' insurance coverage policy requirements when relocating. Moving over long distances comes with the potential risk of losses and accidents. Moreover, you may encounter item damage, which should not breach your removal company or items' insurance policy requirements. Keeping to these policy requirements can guarantee compensation if you experience losses due to theft or accidents during transit.

6. Declutter and Purge

You want to move efficiently and comfortably into a new country, so ensure you declutter and purge items. Take time to decide what needs to be in the luggage and what doesn't, and discard every fluff item that could balloon your moving expenses. You can sort your belongings into sentimental items, the essentials, and the things you need to survive in the country. Decluttering and purging items may require ruthlessness to ensure you only pick what needs to cross the borders.

7. Pack Strategically

Strategic packing helps minimize moving costs, prevents luggage damage, and makes unpacking more manageable. Therefore, have a few essential boxes or suitcases with the items you'd immediately use as you settle, including toiletries, medications, and clothing for a few days. Designate other sturdy boxes to handle bulky items like books and other heavy objects. A few other boxes should handle your electronics and other valuables, including jewelry and important documents. Above all, please remember to accurately label and organize your boxes by category for effortless identification during unpacking.

8. Plan for Customs Clearance

Prioritizing customs clearance can ensure a seamless transition and minimize potential disruptions. It helps you comply with local regulations to avoid possible fines or legal action and guarantee timely customs clearance. It also enables you to protect your intellectual property and streamline logistics when shipping huge items like a vehicle or cabins. During customs clearance, gather documents like commercial invoices, certificates of origin, and proof of ownership for high-value items. Ensure you exhaustively declare your goods undergo duty and tax assessments and inspection. You can be ready to move when all necessary documents are in order and you've paid duties and taxes.

9. Communicate with Your Removal Company

Communicate with your removal company once you're ready. Most removal companies conduct pre-move surveys to offer exact quotes and price estimations. Pre-move surveys are also an international relocation process that international removal companies must adhere to. Most companies prefer in-home surveys, which offer a proper picture of the relocation process's cost. However, some may go with virtual video surveys or self-survey forms—whichever option you choose, ensure it adequately reports the accurate item volume for relocation.

Conclusion

Relocating to a new country can be complex and slightly nerving. However, picking the right company that understands the way around this process can make it more effortless. Knowing how well you can prepare your international removal company for a fun and effortless relocation is good. Remember, adequately preparing for your move is key as it allows you to avoid the last-minute rush and confusion.
