Denyce Graves Foundation Hosts Kickoff Tea for Harvest Moon Gala
Barbara Tober hosted a tea on September 1 to kick off the Denyce Graves Foundation’s upcoming Harvest Moon Gala, set for September 28 at Guastavino’s. The evening will honor Ann Ziff, Misty Copeland, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, with Tober and Ann Gottlieb co-chairing the celebration. “This gala will be a very special evening,” Tober said of the honorees, calling each of them exciting, deserving, and impressive. Foundation founder Denyce Graves added that the night carries a larger purpose, one centered on celebrating artists and stories that have too often gone unrecognized.

The kickoff reception featured performances by Denyce Graves Foundation artists, capped by the world premiere of “There Is Another Sky,” a new work composed by John Conahan and performed by mezzo-soprano Mary Beth Nelson. The piece was written in tribute to Ziff, whose decades of support for young singers drew warm remarks from Gottlieb and from Ziff herself. Reflecting on Graves’ mentorship of emerging artists, Ziff said, “What Denyce understands so beautifully is that talent needs someone to believe in it.”
Guests at the kickoff included board member Clyde Jones alongside Matthew Aucoin, Carrie Rebora Barratt, Janna Bullock, Angela Chen, and dozens of other supporters from New York’s arts and philanthropic circles. The Denyce Graves Foundation advances classical vocal arts through three initiatives: Shared Voices, which trains young performers; Generational Voices, which supports emerging artists; and Hidden Voices, which researches overlooked musicians. Tickets to the Harvest Moon Gala on September 28 remain available for those who wish to join the celebration.
