Ways to Increase Natural Light in Your Home

Ways to Increase Natural Light in Your Home

March 11, 2020 by Emmylou Grimm

When you’re trying to sell your home, how you present it to buyers is key. If they like what they see, they’re more inclined to return for a second look and, ultimately, commit to the purchase. However, before you can invite prospective buyers through the front door, you need to ensure that it’s prepared for an inspecting eye. Natural lighting, in particular, is important to this presentation as it helps establish a homey atmosphere and draw attention to the home’s stronger points. Use these effective ways to increase natural light in your home and make it the dream home buyers want.

Use Lighter Colors in Your Design

Darker design colors, while bold and beautiful, have a way of absorbing the light in a room and making it appear darker than it typically would. Therefore, in order to brighten up your home and enhance its natural light, adopt a lighter color scheme. In fact, this is one of the main reasons that home sellers will typically repaint before putting their homes on the market. Lighter paint and fabrics will better reflect natural light and provide a home with an energetic glow.

Put Up Mirrors Throughout the Home

Mirrors are also a wonderful way to amplify the natural light streaming through your windows. Like lighter colors, their surfaces reflect any light in the room and magnify it, automatically brightening the space. Additionally, the more mirrors you have in a room, the more light you can use in your layout. The most effective method to maximize the natural light in your home is to hang mirrors along opposite walls and let the light continuously bounce off them.

Replace Heavy Curtains with Interior Shutters

Though thick, heavy curtains can be beneficial for privacy and creating a cozy environment inside the home, you’ll want to adopt alternative widow treatments for home showings. Interior shutters specifically are a wonderful way to have the best of both worlds. They’re controlled enough to both block and let in additional natural light, while still stylish enough to maintain a home’s design. There are also different types of interior shutters for you to choose from, so you’re sure to find a style that complements your home.

Wash Your Windows

While it might seem like your windows are fine at first glance, they collect excessive dirt and grime that can block the sunlight. It’s amazing how much of a difference it makes to simply wash your windows before a buyer pays you a visit. Just be sure that you’re washing them thoroughly to prevent streaks and help the glass shine.
