How to Customize Your Home Décor

February 07, 2020 by Emmylou Grimm

If your home is completely decorated but something still seems to be missing when you look around, the space could simply lack personality. It may be time to level up your interior—here’s how to customize your home décor.

Incorporate Your Interests

To start wiping away the banality of your rooms, think about your interests. Are you an outdoorsy person who likes to be immersed in nature? Or perhaps you love losing yourself in a good book. Once you identify what kinds of things you like, you could incorporate them into your home in clever ways. For instance, if you’re the outdoor type, you might switch out a smooth, plain table for a rustic one that retains the look of the logs from which it was hewn. If you read a lot, you could build bookshelves into a wall or add standing shelves that enhance the appearance of your home and hold your favorite novels and other publications.

Hang Up Art

When you were younger, you might have had a couple posters in your room displaying the music group you listened to or the movie that blew you away when you saw it at the theater. If you’re dealing with a boring house, take a pointer from that time. Growing up doesn’t mean you must eschew this kind of self-expression. Clothe your bare walls in artwork that brings these interests to your home. This could be large photographs of faraway locales, clean abstract pieces, depictions of Campbell’s soup, and yes, even posters. Additionally, enhance your choices with rechargeable picture lights to make them stand out even more. By doing this, your home will instantly represent you more clearly than a generic setup would.

Get a Rug

You might not think a rug is all that important, but the style of rug you place down has a large impact on the overall feeling of a room. You should therefore put consideration into the rug you choose. If your other pieces are safe, unoffensive, and bland, you can afford to get a rug that contributes standout charm. People like to get a cow print rug that very much stands out in their homes. Others like to find rugs that include geometric shapes, a combination of colors, or stripes. Make sure your rug is an extension of you and your interests. Choose an area rug color that pops while coordinating it effectively with its surroundings. Like the art on your walls, a rug may also have eye-catching imagery or patterns that reflect what you like, whether you lean geometric or more organic.
